Epiphyllums In Connecticut http://www.angelfire.com/ct3/epiphyllum/ Epiphyllums, sometimes called orchid cactus, are succulents with gorgeous flowers. The blossoms range in size from less than 3 inches to more than 9 inches. A common experience, once someone has seen an epiphyllum in bloom, is to want more. Although still hard to find in local nurseries, they do seem to be increasing in popularity, probably because of increased awareness as a result of an increasing number of web sites displaying these beautiful flowers. In addition to species epiphyllums, there are thousands of hybrids, available in every color except blue.
San Diego Epiphyllum Society http://www.epiphyllum.com/ What we commonly call "epiphyllums" today are actually hybrids of epiphytic cacti species native to the jungles of Central and South America, as well as Mexico. The word epiphyllum in Greek means "upon the leaf" and the flowers appear to bloom directly on the leaves. Jungle cacti, however, have no leaves; their leaf-like parts are actually thickened stems or branches. These stems are typically flat but often grow in a triangular shape. Unlike most desert cacti, epiphyllums are not covered with spines. They do, however, have hair bristles or tiny spines in the areolas, some more so than others.
American Conifer Society http://www.conifersociety.org Association for the development, conservation, and propagation of conifers, with an emphasis on those that are dwarf or unusual. Photo gallery, database, information about membership and journal.
British Conifer Society http://www.britishconifersociety.org.uk/ Welcome to the British Conifer Society - bringing together people with an interest in conifers. Britain is a wonderful place for conifers and conifer enthusiasts. Our climate and topography allow us to grow more of the world's species in these small islands than virtually anywhere else. Our plant and seed collecting tradition has left us a rich heritage of maturing conifers and the Victorian craze gave us the interest and enthusiasm for dwarf and unusual conifers that we have maintained to this day. The British Conifer Society wishes to include everybody from keen gardeners and collectors of ornamental, dwarf and rare conifers, to owners and managers of arboreta and nurseries, and professional botanists.
Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes)
http://www.spc.int/pps/ Water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes, is a free-floating (but sometimes rooted) freshwater plant of the family Pontederiaceae (Figure 1). It has attractive flowers and these have been the reason for its spread around the world. Water hyacinth does not cause problems in its native range, the Amazon basin in South America, but outside that area it is a menace. It impacts on human health, food security, water and power supplies, navigation, biodiversity and natural ecosystem functions in many tropical and subtropical regions because of its ability to quickly invade and choke freshwater bodies. It can grow almost anywhere in the tropics, affecting stationary or slow-moving water bodies such as small roadside drains and ponds to large lakes like Lake Victoria in Central Africa or slow moving rivers like the Sepik River system in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
